FEGLI into Retirement

Do you have to carry each particular option for FEGLI for the 5 years prior to retirement or just carry any of the options? Say, I have basic and option A and C – Can I get option B in retirement? Also, if I’m retiring at over 65 these premiums are all free if I take the reduced amounts. No reason not to take them all?

The law is very specific you must have had whatever option you want to take into retirement for a minimum of 5 years or as of the first available date. If you have Basic and Option A & C, then no, you cannot pick up Option B at this point in time. And you are correct, if you are over age 65 and elect to take these into retirement with reductions, then there is no cost so why wouldn’t you!
