Is it better to get a lower FERS % and give up higher % in TSP in divorce settlement?

My lawyer in Mediation got my soon to be ex to agree to a 32% FERS portion of my retirement instead of the traditional 50%. However, he also gave him 14% more of the TSP portion, so husband got 64% TSP instead of 50%. Somehow he thinks he did me a favor but I have my doubts. Thanks, Charlie

The determination of what may or may may not be the best outcome is determined by a number of factors. Objective factors are easily quantified, but subjective ones are not. How do you value the “sleep at night factor” of knowing you get to keep more of your pension? If your TSP choices do poorly, then that was a good move. If your TSP choices lead to double digit returns, then maybe not such a good move. Too many factors that we can’t control or know of at the time the decision is made. If you feel good about it – just move forward looking through the windshield and not the rear-view mirror.
