Open Season Snafu – SF 2809 processed, RI 79-9 did not

I am a retiree, my wife is an active federal employee. Trying to go from two self-only FEHB plans (same insurer) to self-plus-one under her. I filed the RI 79-9 during Open Season, it was rejected by the Lawrence processing site, I fixed it and sent it on to OPM Washington. Nothing else has happened. What now? I hear their mail room is running weeks behind and I’m losing sleep over this.

Did you wife file an SF-2809 with her agency adding you to her policy during the open season?

Yes, she did, and it was processed successfully.

Then if OPM does not stop withholding from your retirement check, send a copy of her election form adding you and they will back date the changes for your suspension. Happy New Year!

Thank you, I was worried that if I send them a new 79-9 (even if I check Option A) that would disqualify from ever having my own FEHB policy again — or has that horse already left the barn?

No, when both of you are feds you are well protected from going to selfs to self + one or family later or back to selfs. No need to worry.
